DURWIN "BEN" RICE

Durwin "Ben" Rice, 77, of Port Austin, passed away on December 9, 2015.  A celebration of Ben's life will take place on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 1 pm.  This service will be held at the Veteran's Memorial Park located on the shore of Lake Huron in downtown Port Austin.

He was a proud member of The American Legion, Frank Horetski Post 499, Port Austin and the Historian for the 7 ^th District American Legion.

Ben and his wife, Karen Gurche, have been married for 40 years.  He worked as a Deputy Sheriff in Macomb County for over 25 years.  He moved back to Huron County in 1992.  He loved gardening.  He also loved to professionally show dogs, especially Weimaraners.

He was born in Bad Axe, Michigan on August 29, 1938, the son of Raymond and Oveda (Inda) Rice.  He is survived by his wife, Karen; his children: Karen (Chris) Eckersley of Phoenix, Thomas (Kelley) Rice of Cleveland, Patricia (Christopher) Knipp of Canton, Bill (Janet) Gough of Rochester Hills, and Susan (George) McDannel of Clinton Township;   five grandchildren and two Great-grandchildren;  his brothers Raymond (Debbie) Rice of Rochester and Robert Rice of Port Austin.  Also surviving are his two four-legged faithful companions, Larry and Kate.
